The Mayhem Experience

Jonathan's autographHOT.

Freaking HOT.

Like, I’ve seriously never been so hot in my entire life, and I’ve been to summer festivals before. We got a late start, and didn’t arrive until 5:00 p.m. So I missed my shot at seeing In This Moment (*sob*) but my utmost respect goes to those guys who were out there having to perform in that heat. They’re made of sturdier stuff than I, because my first mission after picking up my meet and greet pass was to find a shady spot and sit down before I ended up at the first aid tent within the first half hour of being there. So the heat ruined what could have been a really good time. If only it could have been cloudy. Damn you, Dallas sun! I sweated off three pounds over this ordeal.

But I was able to go back to the tour buses and attend the meet and greet with Korn, and they were all awesome enough to brave the fires of hell to hang out with us for a few minutes. Jonathan Davis signed my “Alone I Play” DVD/CD set–seeming rather impressed that I had it, which made my entire year, really.

That was absolutely the best part of the day to me. Their performance was fabulous as always, and it was well worth the sweltering misery of the day. Once the sun went down, it became somewhat tolerable, and I was able to enjoy myself a little more. Though I was really wishing, when Jonathan hit the audience with the water hose, that some of it would reach us.

Now it’s back to reality with a bang, as my toddler was running fever when we picked her up from her granny’s the morning after, and we’ve been battling that all weekend. Also, this is the last week of summer vacation, and there are 1.3 million things to do before school starts next Monday. I haven’t even bought the first of the school supplies. Argh! Mom fail. Can I run away again? :-)

Mayhem Bound

It won’t take any guesswork to know where I’ll be a week from today. The hubby and I will be making the three-hour drive to Dallas for the Mayhem Festival, and I’m counting the days. It’ll be my 13th time seeing the almighty Korn (thirteenth show on Friday the 13th…I expect GREAT things)! I’ll be armed with a meet and greet pass and I’m not afraid to use it. :-) Let’s just hope all the guys show up and everyone is in a jovial mood. Assuming he blesses us with his presence, it’ll be my third time meeting Jonathan Davis and I’m debating giving him a signed copy of Unleashed for, you know, being such an enormous inspiration to me and all. Who else sings/whispers/roars to me when I’m up late writing through the wee hours? :-) But I know I won’t be able to work up the nerve. If Rock Me were in print already, it would make more sense to give him that one. There’s a Korn concert in that book, after all, and I specifically pay homage to the DJ sets Jon sometimes does at local clubs after a Korn show. Oh well, we’ll see how it goes.

I’m looking forward to the other bands, too. Rob Zombie we’ve seen twice, and we LOVE him–both his music and, yes, his crazy-as-hell movies. I’ve never seen Lamb of God or Five Finger Death Punch, and it’ll be awesome to catch those guys live too. Another band I’m going to be on the lookout for is In This Moment. I’m hooked on their song “The Promise,” and I can’t wait to see Maria Brink in action. Badass women in metal for the win.

It’s going to be a great time, even if it’s going to look, feel and sound like hell on earth (we’re having lovely 100+ degree temps in my neck of the woods–I don’t know how those guys do it. I’d collapse onstage). I’ll never forget attending one of these festivals a few years back…Atreyu had just taken the stage when the skies opened up in a HUGE freaking downpour, prompting a crowd rush to the area under the roof of the pavilion. It was absolute chaos and it got scary there for a few minutes, especially since hubby had gone to get a drink and I knew he was caught up in it somewhere. But he’s a big guy; he can take care of himself. :-) It was mostly me I was worried about! He managed to make it back to where I was but I think he had to manhandle his way through security, who was trying to hold the crowd back. The band just continued to rock out through it all while the thunder rumbled and the rain roared against the roof and the crowd went berserk. Perfect atmosphere. Good times, one of those moments you never forget.

So I’m hoping everyone stays healthy in the coming week and all goes according to plan. It’s been over a year since I’ve been to a concert and I’ve been going crazy for some live in-my-face rock. The guys (and gal) I’m seeing next Friday will definitely deliver, and I love ’em for it!
